RECAP ... Evans waltzes to Columbia Cup win ... CHRIS CHANCELLOR; The News Tribune ... KENNEWICK - Mark Evans did a little dance as cheering fans voiced their support for the Chelan man after he won the 2003 Columbia Cup on Sunday in the Tri-Cities. The three-day event was dominated by Evans and brother Mitch, who won two of the first three heats. But it was Mark Evans who cleared the final hurdle, passing Miss Budweiser's Dave Villwock to win the final. "I was pretty disappointed with my start," said Mark Evans, who averaged 142.774 mph. "I had three, maybe four people inside me. I thought maybe second would be good." Driving the Miss Llumar Window Film, Mark Evans won the 10th race of his career. It was his first victory since driving the Miss Elam Plus to the 2000 Columbia Cup. Mitch Evans, who was third with a speed of 140.443 mph, won the season opener at Evansville, Ill., on July 13, making them the first siblings to win Unlimited Hydroplane races the same year. Miss Elam Plus' Nate Brown (140.796 mph) fended off Mitch Evans for second place, but his mind was on Villwock after the race. "I would have no problem racing Mitch like that," said Brown, who won the race last year. "The red boat guy (Villwock) would square you off - he would do anything to gain an advantage. "Budweiser is whining about contact. I may be half his size, but I'm not going to take it. I try and race like a gentleman and he won't allow it." Villwock, who placed fourth with a speed of 134.403 mph, had a different perspective. "Elam bumped into me before the start," he said. "I got run into Elam again later on the left side." The Miss Budweiser hasn't won the Columbia Cup since 1999 and Villwock said that's not surprising. "The other guys had a lot more squirrels to run with," he said, referring to the fuel restrictions assessed against his boat. "I don't mind racing, but when people have 10 to 15 more mph on the straightaway, it's just unfair. When you're trying to balance things, people get hurt." Miss Grand Central Casino's Mike Weber (131.616 mph) and Miss Trendwest's Terry Troxell (117.437 mph) took fifth and sixth. Troxell and Mitch Evans almost changed the outcome of the race early when they nearly collided. "I came this close to Terry Troxell," said Evans, using his thumb and finger to show an inch. Mitch Evans' third-place finish may have been Sunday's biggest surprise considering his dominant performance in the time trials and first two heats. "I just got hung on the outside and I couldn't get by them at the end," Mitch Evans said. "If it can't be me, it's got to be (Mark Evans)." Brown said the chaotic finish bodes well for the Seafair races beginning Friday in Seattle. "The only reason I ended up where I did was because I tip-toed through the corner. It should be a competitive Seafair."
